Mettle Martyr
PRESS STATEMENT FOR METTLE MARTYR
I am creating art that is a small, sardonic celebration of the "ultimate American feminine."
While gender equality has made significant strides, it remains that the "good" American woman is a martyr.
She sacrifices for image, for material, for children, for man. She is left with only our culture's shared permission to be woman.
Society's worship of female self sacrifice continues to permeate modern American culture, regardless of its futility. Per my observations, the late fifties and early sixties seem to be a time that Americans collectively find adorable. By wrapping my social commentary in these bright, cute and frivolous images, I can make my message not only more palatable, but more accessible to the general public.
As long as the "good woman's" martyrdom remains a treasured social norm, I will continue to battle for balance with my art.
